Commemorative Plaque: Women of Courage

Over the years Henry Burke has been responsible for placing 26 historical markers in Ohio and West Virginia commemorating the Underground Railroad. Most were created by Sewah Studios in Marietta, OH, and funded by the Ohio Historical Society. The marker above, however, is one of two funded by the WV Div. of  Archives and History. It depicts a portion of the reward poster that slaveholder Solomon Harness handed out all over WV and OH in an effort to capture Jane and her seven children, whose extraordinary, and successful, escape on the URR in 1843 is the subject of THE RIVER JORDAN.
